Campeche fishing communities intensify protests against state government

The Federation of Coastal Fishing Communities and Aquaculturists of the Campeche Municipality has intensified protests against the state government, claiming Governor Layda Sansores has failed to address their fundamental demands. The organization, representing communities such as Lerma, San Román, and Seybaplaya, announced they would boycott the governor's official report due to a lack of resolutive agreements and alleged threats against their leaders.

The protesters have outlined four strategic pillars for their survival. They have criticized the current annual support of 4,000 pesos as “insignificant,” representing only 11 pesos per day, and are demanding an additional 4,000 pesos to mitigate the economic crisis. They also seek direct state subsidies for diesel and gasoline, the elimination of intermediaries in fund management, and direct compensation for the impact of oil activities through local audits.

Additionally, the federation is calling on CONAPESCA and state authorities to curb illegal fishing during closed seasons. They have also accused the government of prioritizing the interests of Ciudad del Carmen over the northern and central communities of the state.
