Campeche fishing community protests

Fishermen in Campeche have escalated their protests against the state government over unmet economic demands and campaign promises.

Initially, deep-sea fishermen led by Alejandro Espinosa Echeverría demonstrated at the Government Palace to demand increased life insurance benefits and higher annual economic support. They sought to raise death benefits to a uniform 500,000 pesos and increase annual aid from 7,000 to 15,000 pesos per person. At that stage, representatives met with the Director of Governance to establish a committee for further talks with the State Institute of Fishing and Aquaculture.

Following these initial actions, the Federation of Coastal Fishing Communities and Aquaculturists intensified their movement, announcing a boycott of the governor’s official report. The federation criticized current annual support as “insignificant” and expanded their demands to include direct state subsidies for fuel, the elimination of intermediaries in fund management, and compensation for the impact of oil activities. They also called for stricter enforcement against illegal fishing and accused the government of favoring Ciudad del Carmen over northern and central communities.
