Campeche records highest formal job losses in Mexico

Campeche has recorded the highest loss of formal jobs in Mexico for two consecutive months, according to recent data from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). In August 2026, the state lost 2,843 registered positions, contributing to a total loss of over 5,600 jobs during the July-August period.

Economic specialists attribute this decline to the deceleration of oil activity in the Campeche Sound, the region's primary economic driver. Other contributing factors include the conclusion of federal infrastructure projects and reduced private investment in Ciudad del Carmen. The construction sector was among the hardest hit, losing approximately 1,200 jobs, alongside declines in oil and gas extraction and business services.

Local business leaders have noted that non-payment by Pemex to suppliers has created a chain reaction affecting small and medium-sized enterprises. From January to August, the state has seen a total loss of 4,112 formal jobs, reversing previous recovery trends. In response, the state Secretariat of Economy is pursuing diversification strategies focused on tourism, agroindustry, and renewable energy.
