Economic instability in Campeche, Mexico

The state of Campeche is experiencing significant economic instability characterized by job losses and industry-specific crises.

Data from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) indicates that Campeche recorded the highest loss of formal jobs in Mexico for two consecutive months. Between July and August 2026, the state lost over 5,600 registered positions. This decline is attributed to decelerating oil activity in the Campeche Sound, the end of federal infrastructure projects, and reduced private investment. The construction, oil and gas, and business services sectors have been particularly impacted, with local leaders noting that non-payment by Pemex to suppliers has negatively affected small and medium-sized enterprises.

Simultaneously, the restaurant industry in Campeche and Cancún is facing a crisis due to rising operational costs and declining consumer demand. In Campeche, businesses have reported a 35% drop in sales. Rodrigo Bojórquez Ruiz, president of CANIRAC, described the situation as a “perfect storm” caused by reduced family purchasing power and the increasing cost of supplies. In Cancún, the economic pressure has led to multiple permanent business closures and threatens further shutdowns, impacting employment for kitchen, service, and administrative staff.
