Campi Flegrei earthquake drives demand for psychologists and social workers
A strong earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei area in southern Italy, causing not only structural damage but also significant psychological distress among residents. Armando Cozzuto, president of the Order of Psychologists of Campania, highlighted the emergence of anxiety, disorientation, a continuous state of alert and difficulty regaining a sense of normalcy. He stressed that the seismic event undermines the fundamental feeling of safety in one’s home.
The Order has activated a dedicated emergency psychology working group, coordinating with volunteer associations, regional health agencies, civil protection authorities and the EMDR Italy association. Psychologists and social workers are being mobilised through municipal operational centres to provide mental‑health support, while discussions with regional officials aim to allocate additional professional resources. The goal is to address both the immediate aftermath and the longer‑term emotional recovery of the affected population.
