Campi Flegrei seismic crisis and economic response

Overview

A strong earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei area in southern Italy, prompting an immediate mental-health response. Armando Cozzuto, president of the Order of Psychologists of Campania, noted that the seismic event undermined the “fundamental feeling of safety in one’s home,” leading to anxiety and disorientation. In response, the Order activated an emergency psychology working group to coordinate with civil protection authorities, regional health agencies, and volunteer associations to support long-term emotional recovery.

Amidst the seismic activity, anti-mafia priest Don Maurizio Patriciello warned that the volcanic complex remains a “ticking time bomb,” noting that recent tremors reached magnitudes not seen in four decades. He criticized political inertia, stating that “failing to act today means mourning dead tomorrow,” and called for urgent preventive measures, including possible evacuations. These concerns were reinforced by Civil Protection head Fabio Ciciliano, who warned that a stronger shock could result in fatalities.

Following the impact of recent bradyseismic phenomena on the region's reputation, the Campania Region announced a 1 million euro allocation from the Cohesion and Development Fund to launch a territorial marketing campaign. This initiative, discussed by Regional Tourism Councilor Vincenzo Maraio, aims to protect the local economy and tourism image by highlighting the area’s archaeological and natural heritage to counter the negative effects of the ongoing emergency narrative.
