Campi Flegrei earthquake forces evacuations and port closure FAST-MOVING
A shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei volcanic area near Naples on 31 July 2026, with the epicentre about three kilometres deep near Pozzuoli. More than 100 aftershocks followed, the strongest tremor in the zone in four decades.
Around 120 families – roughly 300 people – were evacuated from damaged neighbourhoods, and 26 people were injured, five of them hospitalised. Power outages affected large parts of the Campi Flegrei and Naples area, and the commercial port of Pozzuoli was closed after the quake. Technical teams from ACER Campania, civil‑protection authorities and regional officials inspected public housing, the port and other infrastructure. After inspections confirmed only superficial damage, the port was scheduled to reopen.
Local officials, including civil‑protection minister Nello Musumeci, bishop Carlo Villano and ACER Campania president David Lebro, coordinated rescue and relief operations, set up emergency shelters and urged residents to stay alert as the seismic swarm continues.
