Campi Flegrei: Campania Council approves 7 million euros for earthquake relief

The Campania Regional Council has approved a 7 million euro fund to support municipalities in the Campi Flegrei area, including Pozzuoli, Bacoli, Monte di Procida, and parts of Naples, following the seismic activity on July 31, 2026. The funds, drawn from the Council's budget surplus, are intended for civil protection, population assistance, and supporting local businesses damaged by the earthquake.

Approximately 3,957 people, representing 1,615 families, have been displaced. While most have found independent housing, hundreds remain in hotels or public structures. Current data indicates that 480 evacuation orders were issued, with only 13 revoked following technical inspections.

Political debate within the Council remains intense. The majority has focused on strengthening Decree Law 144/2026, while opposition members have called for a formal declaration of a state of emergency. Regional President Roberto Fico has advocated for a permanent special law to address the ongoing nature of bradyseism, arguing that a temporary state of emergency is insufficient for a perennial geological phenomenon. Proposals have also been made to increase total regional funding to 12 million euros and to reintroduce tax and mortgage suspensions for those affected.
