Overview

Seismic activity in southern Italy persisted through July 2026. After a series of shallow quakes in the Strait of Messina and Calabrian offshore zone—including magnitude‑3.7 on 4 July and 3.5 on 30 July—a stronger event struck the Campi Flegrei area near Naples on 31 July. INGV later refined the magnitude to 4.7, depth 1–3 km, epicentre about 5 km southeast of Pozzuoli, the strongest tremor in the region in four decades and linked to a recent rise in bradyseismic activity. The quake occurred at 19:46 local time and was felt across Naples and surrounding towns, prompting evacuations, power outages, temporary black‑outs and stalled elevators, with neighborhoods such as Pizzofalcone and Fuorigrotta affected. Rail, high‑speed, metro and the Cumana and Circumflegrea lines were suspended as a precaution. Minor structural damage, including a façade collapse in Pozzuoli, fallen plaster, cracks and damage to a high‑voltage tower, was recorded; eight to ten people suffered light injuries. Mayors of Pozzuoli (Gigi Manzoni) and Bacoli (Josi della Ragione) activated emergency coordination centres and civil‑protection units, working with the Vesuvian Observatory, the fire brigade, the prefecture’s rescue‑coordination centre and INGV, which continues to monitor the sequence across multiple fault zones. National authorities, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Civil‑Protection Minister Nello Musumeci, were kept in constant contact and a crisis unit was convened to oversee the ongoing seismic swarm, which produced additional aftershocks of up to magnitude 3.8 later that night.
