Campi Flegrei: Italian government rejects all decree amendments

The Italian government has rejected all amendments to the Campi Flegrei decree during sessions of the Budget and Environment commissions in the Chamber of Deputies. The decision has sparked intense criticism from local leaders and opposition parties, who claim the legislative process has failed to address the urgent needs of the region facing volcanic bradyseism.

Luigi Manzoni, the Mayor of Pozzuoli, accused the government of betrayal, stating that those who truly cared for the area would have approved the amendments in full. He indicated that local citizens may organize protests in Rome if adequate responses are not provided. Similarly, members of the Five Star Movement expressed deep dissatisfaction, alleging that the government used discussions with regional administrations as a pretext to delay action while ignoring substantive proposals regarding justice, public administration, and municipal support.

Reports suggest the rejection may have stemmed from a lack of approval from the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), which would have required a complete reformulation of the amendments. Political representatives from both the opposition and parts of the majority have condemned the outcome, describing the situation as a failure to protect the future of thousands of residents in the Campi Flegrei area.
