Campi Flegrei mayors demand government action on safety and relocation
Mayors from the Campi Flegrei region, including those from Pozzuoli, Bacoli, Quarto, and Monte di Procida, have issued a joint statement responding to comments made by Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci regarding a recent protest in Rome. The mayors clarified that the government had been formally notified of the mobilization via a letter sent to the Ministry, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and other ministers. They stated the protest was driven by citizen frustration over unapproved amendments and aimed to secure concrete commitments for displaced families, building safety, and local economic stability.
Political figures Gianfranco Librandi and Carmine Morelli have also called for greater transparency regarding the coordination between the central government, the Campania Region, and local municipalities. They emphasized the need for a dual approach: providing financial aid for residents who choose to relocate voluntarily, while ensuring that those who wish to stay are provided with safe, seismically reinforced housing. They have urged all levels of government to take responsibility for their decisions and avoid shifting blame regarding the management of the territory's safety and reconstruction.
