Campi Flegrei: Prosecutors launch inquiry into seismic risk management
Italian prosecutors have opened an inquiry into the management of seismic risks in the Campi Flegrei area, specifically focusing on the failure to secure fragile slopes. The investigation aims to reconstruct administrative actions, delays, and potential responsibilities regarding risk management. While no suspects have been identified yet, the inquiry will be handled by specialized pools focusing on environmental, urban planning, and public administration crimes.
In response to the ongoing bradyseism, Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci has advocated for a policy of ‘vigilant coexistence’ with the seismic activity, noting that relocation lacks local consensus. The government has allocated over 800 million euros for interventions on public and private property. Financial aid for home safety upgrades will increase from 50% to 70%, reaching 100% for low-income families. The affected area includes approximately 15,000 buildings and 85,000 residents.
Local impacts continue to escalate in Pozzuoli, where the mayor has halted heavy vehicle transit to Ischia and Procida due to the risk of collapsing buildings along access roads. Currently, 1,017 families, totaling 2,696 people, have been evacuated from the area.
