Campi Flegrei earthquake evacuations building safety government response

A magnitude‑4.7 earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei area on 31 July, the strongest tremor recorded there in four decades. The INGV Vesuviano Observatory declared the ensuing seismic swarm ended on 3 August, but the aftermath remains critical.

About 144 families – roughly 350 people – have been evacuated after structural inspections declared ten buildings and seven commercial premises unsafe. The fire brigade has carried out 86 inspections and has 130 more pending. The Region of Campania has allocated €1 million for autonomous accommodation for the displaced, while the national government has earmarked €550 million for emergency response and infrastructure repairs.

The Naples prosecutor has opened an exploratory investigation into the safety of the costoni (rocky slopes) with no crimes alleged, and is reviewing unused funds earmarked for their securitisation. Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli visited Pozzuoli, and Minister of Civil Protection Nello Musumeci pledged further support. Local architects and civic groups have called for a special law and an emergency state to accelerate building safety measures across the area.
