Campo Grande faces potential R$ 20 million fine over health center failures

The Public Ministry of Mato Grosso do Sul (MPMS) has filed a request for the execution of a sentence against the Municipality of Campo Grande due to ongoing irregularities at the Nova Bahia Regional Health Center (CRS). The legal action seeks to enforce court orders that have been in place since a definitive decision was reached in June 2022.

Investigations by the MPMS, the Regional Medical Council, and the Municipal Health Council revealed severe deficiencies, including a lack of essential life-support medications, insufficient medical staff, a shortage of pediatricians, and inadequate equipment and climate control. The MPMS is requesting that the municipality prove full compliance with health ministry requirements and regularize professional staffing. Failure to comply could result in daily fines of R$ 50,000, with a total potential liability of up to R$ 20 million for the city.
