Public healthcare service failures in Campo Grande

The Municipality of Campo Grande is facing legal and investigative scrutiny regarding systemic failures in its public health services.

Initially, the Public Ministry of Mato Grosso do Sul (MPMS) sought to enforce a court sentence against the city due to long-standing irregularities at the Nova Bahia Regional Health Center. These deficiencies included shortages of life-support medications, insufficient medical staff, and inadequate equipment. The MPMS requested that the municipality regularize staffing and comply with health ministry requirements, warning that failure to do so could result in fines totaling up to R$ 20 million.

Subsequent investigations by the MPMS expanded to address widespread shortages of essential medications—such as losartan, metformin, and hydrochlorothiazide—and medical supplies across various health units. Reports also highlighted equipment failures preventing patients from obtaining necessary exams. The Municipal Health Secretariat (Sesau) attributed these distribution issues to problems with companies that won public tenders and stated it is working to normalize supplies.

Recent developments confirm that the MPMS has launched a formal investigation into these shortages, which residents report have persisted since last year. At the USF Jardim Macaúbas, patients continue to face difficulties obtaining diagnostic exams due to equipment failures. Sesau has indicated that it is taking measures to notify the companies responsible for the distribution issues in an effort to resolve the situation.
