Brazil launches widespread rabies vaccination campaigns

Multiple municipalities across Brazil are conducting rabies vaccination campaigns for dogs and cats to prevent the spread of the virus to humans.

In Paraíba, the State Health Secretariat is holding a ‘Dia D’ across 223 municipalities, aiming to immunize over 820,000 animals using 800 vaccination posts. João Pessoa is also conducting a ‘Dia D’ with 135 mobile points. In Salvador, the campaign is entering its final weekend with mobile units in Cajazeiras and Cabula/Beiru.

Other regional efforts include door-to-door vaccination in Rio Branco, intensive immunization in Barra do Pojuca (Camaçari), and mobile services in Vila Popular. In Cruzeiro do Sul, the campaign aims to reach 18,000 animals, while Itaboraí will begin an 11-week itinerant program in September. Additionally, São Paulo is hosting a pet adoption event in Santana to promote responsible ownership.

Health officials emphasize that rabies is a highly lethal zoonotic disease and that annual vaccination for pets aged three months and older is essential for community safety.
