Italian municipalities launch larval mosquito control campaigns

The city of Rome approved ordinance No. 57 (21 April 2026) that bans routine “rain‑spray” adulticide treatments in condominiums and limits chemical use to targeted larvicidal actions in stagnant water sources such as drains, pits and garden areas. Adulticide sprays may be applied only after a confirmed infestation, with technical supervision and prior notification.

The coastal town of Falconara has started a municipal larvicidal disinfestation programme that treats all manhole grates each month. Environment Assessor Elisa Penna stressed that the approach focuses on eliminating mosquito larvae while preserving other insects, and urged residents to remove standing water from private containers.

Corigliano Rossano began its second night‑time disinfestation cycle (18‑26 June 2026). Teams will operate between 02:00 and 06:00 local time, applying treatments in numerous urban zones and advising citizens to keep doors, windows and outdoor laundry closed during and after the operations.

In Campobasso, local authorities organised an information campaign against mosquito proliferation and distributed anti‑larval kits to residents.

All measures aim to curb mosquito populations, reduce the risk of vector‑borne diseases and limit environmental impact from indiscriminate insecticide use.
