Canada and UAE sign Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement

Canada and the United Arab Emirates have signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to deepen bilateral trade and investment. The agreement, which was negotiated in a record 47 days, aims to reduce or eliminate tariffs on over 99% of current Canadian exports to the UAE.

During an official visit to Ottawa, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to launch a new strategic partnership. The discussions focused on several key sectors, including mining, logistics, energy, defense, and advanced technology. The two nations also signed preliminary agreements regarding cooperation in renewable energy and diplomatic training.

The deal follows a C$70 billion ($50 billion) investment framework announced during Carney’s visit to the UAE in November 2025. This partnership is part of a broader effort by the Canadian government to diversify its trade partners and reduce economic dependence on the United States. The CEPA is expected to enter into force in 2027.
