Canada car thefts surge due to Russian black market demand

A sophisticated international criminal network is smuggling stolen vehicles from Canada to Russia to feed a booming black market. This surge in car thefts is an unintended consequence of Western economic sanctions, which aimed to cut off Russia's access to automotive markets but instead drove up demand for Western SUVs and pickup trucks on the illicit market.

Criminal groups are reportedly stealing thousands of vehicles annually from streets, parking lots, and private residences in Canada. These cars are then concealed in shipping containers and sent to Russia, often via the Middle East. Interpol has received 4,798 reports of stolen Canadian vehicles being located in Russia between February 2024 and July 2026.
