Canada declares end to two-year measles outbreak

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has officially declared the end of a two-year measles outbreak that began in New Brunswick in October 2024. The declaration follows more than two months without any new cases linked to the outbreak.

Throughout the outbreak, 6,417 cases were recorded across ten provinces and territories. Ontario reported the highest number of infections with 2,390 cases, followed by Alberta with 2,299 and Manitoba with 1,033. Health officials noted that most infected individuals had not been vaccinated. The outbreak also resulted in the deaths of two infants in Ontario and Alberta who were infected in the womb.

The sustained transmission of the virus led to Canada losing its global measles elimination status in November 2025. To regain this status, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) requires Canada to maintain zero transmission for at least 12 months and demonstrate improved surveillance and response capabilities. Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Joss Reimer urged citizens to maintain up-to-date vaccinations, noting that the virus continues to circulate globally.
