Canada measles outbreak concluded
Overview
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has officially declared the end of the two-year measles outbreak that began in New Brunswick in October 2024. The declaration follows more than two months without any new cases linked to the outbreak.
Throughout the period of transmission, 6,417 cases were recorded across ten provinces and territories. Ontario reported the highest number of infections with 2,390 cases, followed by Alberta with 2,299 and Manitoba with 1,033. The outbreak resulted in the deaths of two infants in Ontario and Alberta who were infected in utero.
Due to sustained transmission, Canada lost its global measles elimination status in November 2025. To regain this status, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) requires Canada to maintain zero transmission for at least 12 months and demonstrate improved surveillance and response capabilities. Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Joss Reimer has urged citizens to maintain up-to-date vaccinations, noting that the virus continues to circulate globally.
