Nepal flooding: Latvia and Canada coordinate search for missing citizens

Following a glacier collapse and subsequent flooding in the Himalayan region, international search efforts are intensifying for missing citizens. The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that 33 Latvian nationals are currently considered missing. The last contact with a guide for the largest Latvian group was recorded at 8:38 AM, potentially at a border crossing on the Chinese side.

Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže has agreed to cooperate with the Canadian Foreign Minister to coordinate search operations. Canada has deployed 10 officials to Nepal to assist in the aftermath. Latvia is also coordinating with Ukraine, which reports 56 missing persons due to the disaster.

A consular department employee from Latvia arrived in Nepal on Thursday morning to assist with local efforts. Authorities have also issued warnings regarding scammers attempting to exploit the families of the missing by offering false information for payment.
