Canada expands Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative to $700 million
The Canadian federal government has announced an additional $500 million in funding over the next five years for the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative. This expansion brings the total program funding to $700 million.
Delivered through regional development agencies, the initiative supports two primary groups: businesses looking to adopt AI into their existing processes and Canadian AI firms seeking to scale or commercialize their products. Targeted sectors include health and life sciences, energy, natural resources, transportation, agriculture, manufacturing, and robotics.
According to government data, the initial $200 million phase supported over 218 projects and contributed to the creation or retention of more than 1,100 jobs. These projects attracted an average of $1.77 in additional investment for every federal dollar provided.
