Canada faces gaps in AI sovereignty awareness and institutional trust

A recent study conducted by IDC for the Toronto-based company Cohere reveals a significant gap in understanding AI sovereignty among Canadian business leaders. While over half of decision-makers view AI sovereignty as a major strategic priority, nearly one-third struggle to define the concept. Only 13% believe the notion is widely understood within their organizations. Compared to the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany, Canadian organizations show the lowest awareness levels, with 89% reporting limited knowledge of the subject.

Separately, research from the Chaire de recherche sur la démocratie, le vivre-ensemble et les valeurs communes in Quebec indicates a crisis of trust in major institutions. Among 1,500 respondents, technology giants ranked at the bottom of the confidence index, alongside labor unions and the political sphere. In contrast, science, traditional media, municipalities, and private companies continue to inspire higher levels of trust within the Quebec population.
