Canada faces resource and policy challenges from AI data centre growth
Canadian municipalities and provinces are facing growing challenges regarding the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centres. In Chatham-Kent, the council has directed staff to conduct a study on land-use policies to manage the impacts of large-scale digital infrastructure. The study will address concerns such as energy consumption, water use, noise, and infrastructure capacity, as current provincial and federal frameworks lack specific land-use controls for the industry.
Simultaneously, in Alberta, concerns are rising over whether the province’s water supply can sustain the high demands of AI data centres. These facilities reportedly require millions of gallons of fresh water daily. Given Alberta’s history of drought, reliance on agricultural irrigation, and the need for water in wildfire suppression, the potential competition for fresh drinking water between the tech industry and citizens remains a significant point of contention.
