Canada food charities face surging demand and resource shortages
A survey conducted by Ipsos for Second Harvest, titled ‘The State of Food Charity in Canada,’ reveals significant strain on food assistance organizations across the country. The report indicates that 89% of responding non-profits experienced an increase in demand for food over the past year.
Due to limited resources and food supplies, 35% of organizations reported having to turn people away, with an average of 269 individuals refused assistance per organization. Additionally, 33% of respondents reported maintaining a waitlist, with an average of 878 people waiting for support.
The findings suggest that food insecurity affects a diverse demographic, including working professionals such as teachers and nurses. Furthermore, 49% of the responding organizations, which include shelters, faith-based groups, and food pantries, do not access support through traditional federal, provincial, or regional food bank networks.
