Canada Grants $5 M to Greenland Molybdenum Mine

Canada has approved a C$7 million (US$4.9 million) non‑repayable grant to support the Malmbjerg open‑pit molybdenum project in east Greenland. The funding, provided through Natural Resources Canada’s Critical Minerals Research, Development and Demonstration programme, marks the first G7 investment in Greenland mining.

Molybdenum, classified as a critical mineral by the European Union and the United States, is essential for strengthening steel used in aerospace, energy and defence applications. With China supplying about 40 % of global molybdenum and having introduced export controls, Western governments are seeking to diversify supply chains.

The investment follows heightened interest in Greenland’s mineral wealth after former U.S. President Donald Trump’s rejected bid to claim the territory, underscoring growing strategic focus on Arctic resources.
