Greenland energy & minerals amid Arctic competition
Entities: Jameson Land Basin · Dr. Phil · Jameson Land · Greenland Energy Company · Donald Trump
Overview
Since June 2026 Greenland Energy has upgraded rigs and funded a $70 million two‑well drilling campaign in the Jameson Land Basin, while Greenland Mines advanced a 7,500‑metre diamond‑drilling program at Skaergaard and secured a stake in AnorTech. Amaroq Ltd reported high‑grade gold results from Nalunaq, and Dalaroo Metals identified new rare‑earth targets at Blue Lagoon. Canada approved a C$7 million grant for the Malmbjerg molybdenum project, and NATO and U.S. forces have been monitoring rising Chinese activity in the Arctic.
In July, the Greenland government warned Greenland Energy of unauthorized drilling in Jameson Land. The warning was reiterated on 8 August after the company moved drilling equipment to the eastern coast of Jameson Land without a permit from the mineral resources authority. Greenland Energy plans to spend about $60 million on two exploratory wells, claiming the area could contain up to $1 trillion of crude oil. Although new oil licences were halted in 2021, British firm 80 Mile retains existing exploration rights in the region. The firm has hired former talk‑show host Dr. Phil for a documentary and added a U.S. Navy veteran linked to the “Golden Dome” missile‑defence plan to its board. Two days after the warning, former President Donald Trump posted a provocative image on Truth Social, reiterating his rhetoric about U.S. control of the Arctic.
