Canada healthcare debate intensifies over privatization

Debate continues regarding the expansion of private healthcare services across Canada. In Ontario, the Ontario Health Coalition has criticized the Ford government for allocating $155 million to private MRI, CT, and endoscopy clinics, and $125 million to private orthopedic clinics. The coalition argues that these funds should instead be used to increase the capacity of public hospitals, noting that many existing facilities have underutilized operating rooms and MRI machines that remain idle outside of standard business hours.

In Alberta, the implementation of Bill 11 (Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2025) marks a shift toward a two-tiered system. The legislation allows eligible physicians to provide publicly funded care while also offering certain services for private payment. This allows patients to pay out of pocket to avoid public system wait times. Proponents suggest that privately funded but publicly administered care could be a viable model, while critics view such moves as a step toward American-style privatization.
