Canada introduces voluntary guidelines for AI data centres

The Canadian federal government has introduced a voluntary five-point framework to guide the development of artificial intelligence data centres. Unveiled by AI Minister Evan Solomon in Markham, Ontario, the guidelines aim to address growing public concern regarding the environmental and economic impacts of large-scale digital infrastructure.

The proposed principles call on companies to ensure data centres create lasting local benefits, avoid shifting electricity costs to citizens, minimize water usage and environmental impacts, maintain transparency regarding local effects, and provide strategic value to Canada.

While the framework has received endorsements from major technology and telecommunications firms—including Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Bell, and Telus—the federal government acknowledged it lacks the jurisdiction to enforce these standards. Minister Solomon noted that the responsibility for monitoring and regulating data centre projects will ultimately fall to provincial and municipal authorities.
