Canada invests $6.5M in Prince Edward Island power link and housing infrastructure

The Canadian federal government announced two separate infrastructure investments in Prince Edward Island. A $5.9 million grant to PEI Energy Corporation will fund the Prince Edward Island–New Brunswick Interconnection Expansion Project, including two new 200‑megawatt, 138‑kilovolt submarine cables, transmission upgrades and substation modernization, with construction slated for completion by 2028. Minister Tim Hodgson highlighted the project’s role in improving regional reliability and supporting the Atlantic Canada electricity system.

A second grant of more than $620,000, delivered through the Build Communities Strong Fund, will finance water‑service upgrades in the Rural Municipality of Kinkora. The project will add about 1.5 km of sewer mains, over 700 m of storm‑water pipes, new manholes, catch basins and detention ponds, enabling the development of 29 new housing lots (up to 78 residential units). Agriculture and Agri‑Food Minister Heath MacDonald said the investment will help meet growing housing demand and strengthen community infrastructure.
