Canada federal infrastructure investments

In late July 2026, the Canadian federal government announced a major funding package for Nunavut under the Build Communities Strong Fund. The agreement allocated $81.3 million for infrastructure, $74.1 million for health facilities, and $18.7 million for water, transportation and community projects, supporting the construction of at least 750 new housing units. A $35.6 million contract was awarded to Inuit‑owned Arctic Fresh Projects Inc. to build a 23‑unit apartment building in Iqaluit, emphasizing the use of Canadian‑sourced materials and job creation in the North.

A week later, in early August 2026, the government disclosed two additional investments in Prince Edward Island. A $5.9 million grant to PEI Energy Corporation will fund the Prince Edward Island–New Brunswick Interconnection Expansion Project, adding two 200‑MW submarine cables and upgrading transmission infrastructure, with completion targeted for 2028. A separate $620,000 grant will upgrade water services in the Rural Municipality of Kinkora, enabling the development of 29 new housing lots (up to 78 units). Both announcements illustrate the continued rollout of federal funding across regions, targeting energy reliability, water infrastructure, and affordable housing under a unified national program.
