Canada invests in food security and agricultural technology

Canada is implementing a CA$3.2 billion National Food Security Strategy to bolster its domestic food system and reduce dependence on imports. This initiative follows deteriorating trade relations with the United States, including the non-renewal of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and the imposition of 50 percent tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, and steel scheduled for January 2027.

As part of these efforts to strengthen local production, the Canadian government is investing C$5 million into Kinghaven Farms, the producer of Haven Greens in Ontario. The funding, provided through the AgriInnovate Program, will support the adoption of automation and climate control technologies at the company’s controlled environment agriculture (CEA) greenhouse. The project features an end-to-end mobile gully system designed to increase cultivation precision, reduce labor costs, and enable year-round production of leafy greens.
