Canadian national food security strategy implementation

Overview

The Canadian government is implementing a CA$3.2 billion National Food Security Strategy to strengthen domestic food systems and reduce import dependence. This initiative follows deteriorating trade relations with the United States, including the non-renewal of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and scheduled 50 percent tariffs on Canadian vehicles and steel for January 2027.

To support this strategy, Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath MacDonald has announced various investments in agricultural technology and infrastructure. In Alberta, nearly $900,000 was allocated to SmartGRO Bioengineering Inc. to scale clean lighting technology for indoor agriculture. In Ontario, investments include C$5 million for Kinghaven Farms to support automation and climate control in greenhouse production, as well as $150 million for Velocity Agri-Capital Partners as part of a larger $2 billion commitment to FAC Capital. These efforts aim to enhance national food security, industry resilience, and global competitiveness through controlled environment agriculture and agri-food infrastructure.
