Canada launches National AI Literacy Initiative

The Government of Canada has launched the National AI Literacy Initiative, a partnership with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) designed to provide free AI training resources across the country. Announced by AI Minister Evan Solomon, the initiative is a component of Canada’s broader National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.

The program will follow a tiered rollout starting September 21, initially targeting students and educators through free courses available in both official languages. Support for workers and job seekers via the Government of Canada Job Bank is expected later this year, with broader public programming scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.

The federal government is investing $13 million to expand AI literacy, with the goal of reaching approximately one million post-secondary students and 50,000 K-12 institutions. The curriculum aims to help citizens understand AI, use it responsibly, and recognize risks such as bias, misinformation, and privacy violations.
