Canada National AI Literacy Initiative

Overview

The Canadian government has introduced the National AI Literacy Initiative, a $13 million program developed in partnership with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii). The initiative is part of the country’s broader National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and aims to provide free training to help citizens understand AI, use it responsibly, and identify risks like bias and misinformation.

The program features a tiered rollout. Starting September 21, the first phase will offer courses for K-12 educators and post-secondary students. Following this, the initiative will expand to include ‘Essentials for Canadians’, a course for the general public accessible through the Job Bank and Employment and Social Development Canada’s Training Finder platform. The government intends to reach approximately one million post-secondary students and 50,000 K-12 institutions by the end of 2026.
