Canada MAiD oversight report reveals widespread reporting errors

A recent oversight report from the British Columbia Ministry of Health has identified significant compliance and reporting issues regarding Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) cases. The ‘Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) Oversight 2024 Year End Report’ revealed that 50.9 per cent of the 4,160 euthanasia requests in the province contained reporting errors, totaling 2,807 instances where information was missing or required clarification.

Beyond administrative errors, the report highlighted 353 cases involving compliance concerns serious enough to require formal education for physicians, nurses, and pharmacists to ensure they meet legal requirements and professional standards.

These findings come amid broader national debate in Canada regarding the evolution of MAiD safeguards. Since the program's inception, criteria have shifted, including the 2021 removal of the requirement that death be ‘reasonably foreseeable.’ Discussions continue regarding the potential expansion of eligibility to include mature minors and individuals whose sole underlying condition is mental illness, currently scheduled for 2027.
