Overview

Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program remains under scrutiny regarding its ethical boundaries, oversight, and expansion. Since legalization in 2016, more than 100,000 deaths have been recorded. The ‘Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) Oversight 2024 Year End Report’ from the British Columbia Ministry of Health identified significant compliance and reporting issues. The report revealed that 50.9 per cent of the 4,160 euthanasia requests in the province contained reporting errors, with 2,807 instances of missing or unclear information.

Additionally, the report highlighted 353 cases involving compliance concerns serious enough to necessitate formal education for physicians, nurses, and pharmacists to ensure adherence to legal requirements and professional standards. These findings add to existing regional concerns, such as those in Ontario regarding involuntary euthanasia allegations and Quebec’s allowance of advance requests for those facing potential incapacity.
