Canada faces wildfire emergencies in B.C. and storm damage in Ottawa
In British Columbia, Chief Greg Gabriel of the Penticton Indian Band has called for increased cooperation to prevent wildfires, citing rapid environmental changes. Gabriel highlighted the need to address logging practices and drought conditions following wildfires that forced thousands to evacuate. He also requested that the province establish alternative emergency evacuation routes, as Highway 97 has been cut off by the Bald Range fire. B.C. Premier David Eby stated that the Transportation Ministry will prioritize identifying secondary egress roads due to high demand.
In Ottawa, a second August storm has caused significant disruption. Hydro Ottawa reported approximately 8,000 customers without power, with the majority of outages concentrated in the Knoxdale-Merivale, College, and Bay wards.
