Canadian wildfire emergencies and policy responses

Canada is experiencing severe wildfire emergencies across multiple provinces. In British Columbia, wildfires such as the Bald Range fire have forced thousands to evacuate and cut off major transportation routes like Highway 97. Local leaders, including Chief Greg Gabriel of the Penticton Indian Band, have called for better cooperation, changes to logging practices, and the establishment of alternative evacuation routes.

By September, the crisis expanded in scale, with Ontario recording its worst wildfire season on record, burning over 7,250 square kilometers. These fires led to the evacuation of several First Nations communities, including Armstrong, Whitesand, and Collins. Humanitarian efforts, such as a quilt campaign in Markham, have emerged to support displaced residents.

In response to the escalating intensity of these seasons, there are growing calls for a shift in national policy. Experts are advocating for a move away from purely reactive suppression strategies toward the integration of Indigenous fire stewardship, such as cultural burning, to improve national emergency preparedness.
