Canada wildfires burn 4 million hectares across multiple provinces

Wildfires have destroyed approximately 4 million hectares of land across Canada this year, with Ontario and British Columbia facing the most severe impacts. In Ontario, the province is experiencing its most intense wildfire season on record, with over 700,000 hectares burned and 152 active fires, 12 of which are considered uncontrolled. Dozens of communities have faced evacuations, and some residents have reported receiving warnings too late.

British Columbia has declared a state of emergency due to over 100 active fires. The Bald Range fire has burned more than 15,000 hectares, forcing roughly 20,000 people to evacuate and leaving another 10,000 on standby. Severe drought conditions, exacerbated by record-low water levels in Okanagan Lake, are fueling the rapid spread of these blazes.

Government officials attribute the intensity and frequency of the fires to a combination of lightning strikes, human activity, and extreme weather. High temperatures and prolonged drought, influenced by El Niño patterns, have created highly flammable conditions. Lightning is responsible for about half of the fires, often igniting in remote areas where they are difficult to detect early.
