Overview

The 2026 wildfire season in Ontario set new records, with more than 170 active fires reported on July 22 and a burned area exceeding 7,250 sq km. Thunder Bay 36 remains the only major fire showing measurable growth. Smoke continues to affect parts of the province and drift south into the United States. First Nations maintain calls for a public inquiry as authorities focus on stabilising the outlook and protecting remaining communities.

Overall, the crisis is gradually abating, but monitoring and response capacity remain high as weather improves.
