Canadian Wildfires Blanket U.S. Midwest and Northeast with Hazardous Smoke

More than 950 wildfires are burning across Canada, with roughly 241 classified as out‑of‑control. Smoke from these fires has been carried by prevailing winds into the United States, prompting air‑quality alerts for over 100 million people from the Midwest through the Northeast. Cities such as Detroit, Chicago, New York, Washington DC and Boston have recorded hazardous PM2.5 levels, leading health officials to advise residents—especially children, the elderly and those with heart or lung conditions—to stay indoors, limit exertion and wear high‑efficiency masks. State and federal agencies, including the National Weather Service and the EPA, issued “unhealthy” or “hazardous” alerts across at least 21 states. Canadian authorities have deployed the military to evacuate remote communities such as Fort Hope in Ontario and have mobilised hundreds of aircraft to fight the blazes. In the United States, politicians have responded with rhetoric linking the smoke to trade policy; former President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on Canada over what he described as “filthy, polluted air.” The smoke plume also caused “dirty rain” and raised concerns ahead of the 2026 World Cup final in New York, while severe thunderstorms added to the weather challenges in the region.
