Canada's strategic maple syrup reserves projected to deplete by February 2027
Canada's strategic maple syrup reserves, located in Quebec, are expected to be completely exhausted by the end of February 2027. According to the Producteurs et transformateurs d'acériculture du Québec (PPAQ), the remaining stocks have already been sold and will be delivered to buyers in the coming months.
The depletion is attributed to a surge in demand rather than poor harvests. Exports have risen significantly over the last two years, with American buyers increasing stockpiles due to concerns regarding potential tariffs. Canadian government data shows maple syrup exports to the United States grew by 17 percent between 2024 and 2025, with the U.S. accounting for over 60 percent of exports.
While the strategic reserve acts as a buffer for years with lower yields, industry experts note that the lack of a reserve makes the market more vulnerable to weather conditions. However, PPAQ indicates there is no immediate shortage risk, as processors and buyers have increased their own inventories by more than 35 million pounds (approximately 16 million kg).
