Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand visited Benin’s economic hub Cotonou on Thursday to open Canada’s new embassy, the first such visit by a Canadian foreign minister to the country. The embassy is part of Canada’s Africa strategy released in March 2025, which links foreign aid with economic partnerships aimed at countries poised for demographic and economic growth.

Anand said the trade‑development nexus includes boosting the role of women in African workforces, expanding airline connections, and launching security and trade projects. In a telephone interview from Abidjan, she highlighted ongoing talks with Côte d’Ivoire to update their air‑transport agreement for direct flights and noted Canadian firms such as Sander Geophysics conducting airborne petroleum surveys in the region. The initiative also builds on Canada’s ties within the Francophonie and broader West African cooperation.
