Canada Parliament resumes session with major economic bills

Members of Parliament in Canada have returned for the autumn session of the House of Commons, with economic policy and trade relations serving as central themes. The government, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, is expected to introduce a major piece of economic legislation titled ‘Loi pour un Canada plus fort’ (Act for a Stronger Canada). While officials state the bill aims to increase economic resilience and facilitate labour agreements, critics and labour leaders warn it could threaten the right to strike by codifying the government’s ability to intervene in collective bargaining.

In addition to the new economic bill, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne is preparing to present an autumn budget and a bill to extend the excise tax break on fuel. The session also takes place amidst ongoing trade tensions with the United States. The Liberal government currently maintains a slim majority in the House following recent by-elections, while opposition parties face reduced influence and shifting leadership dynamics.
