Canadian Parliament economic legislative session

The Canadian Parliament has resumed its fall session, with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government focusing on an ambitious economic and infrastructure agenda.

A central legislative priority is Bill C-39, the ‘Building Canada Strong Act.’ This bill aims to accelerate approvals for major infrastructure projects, including ports, pipelines, hydro-electricity lines, airports, and data centers. While the government maintains that the legislation will not lower environmental standards, critics from the Green Party and the Bloc Québécois have raised concerns that it may allow federal authorities to bypass environmental regulations based on technical or economic feasibility.

Other legislative efforts include reforms to the Canada Labour Code and Bill C-38, which seeks to extend the suspension of the federal fuel excise tax.

Domestic economic pressures, such as inflation and the cost of living, remain central to parliamentary debate. While opposition leaders continue to criticize the government regarding rising grocery and fuel costs, the Prime Minister has attributed these issues to international volatility and trade tensions with the United States.

In a separate development, federal leaders Pierre Poilievre and Mark Carney paid tribute to Leïla Ben Salem, a Canada Revenue Agency employee killed in Montreal. The Prime Minister expressed condolences to her family, stating the government would work to ensure justice is served.
