Canadian Wildfire Smoke Threatens New York Air Quality

Canada is battling more than 770 wildfires, with hundreds out of control. Smoke from fires in Ontario and western Canada is being carried by a persistent jet‑stream pattern into the Northeastern United States, reaching New York. While current conditions are less severe than the mid‑July air‑quality emergency, officials warn the smoke could return.

The World Health Organization describes wildfire smoke as a frequently underestimated health risk. Fine particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, causing coughing, eye and throat irritation, headaches, and worsening asthma, chronic lung disease, heart disease and other conditions. Babies, young children, pregnant women, older adults and people with disabilities are especially vulnerable. The WHO advises anyone who can smell the smoke to stay indoors, avoid using fans or air‑conditioners, and take steps to reduce exposure.
