Canadians support retaliatory tariffs against U.S. in new poll

A new Ipsos poll indicates that a strong majority of Canadians support the federal government's decision to end trade talks with the United States and implement retaliatory tariffs. According to the survey, 63 per cent of respondents believe Canada was correct to stand firm in negotiations, even at the risk of job losses and higher costs. Additionally, 73 per cent of Canadians back Ottawa’s “dollar for dollar” counter-tariffs on $28 billion worth of U.S. goods, responding to tariffs of up to 50 per cent imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The poll highlights a significant generational divide regarding the trade dispute. While approximately 80 per cent of baby boomers support the government's hardline stance, support is notably lower among younger demographics. Only 48 per cent of Generation Z adults and 57 per cent of Millennials support Canada standing firm, with 59 per cent of Millennials backing the retaliatory tariffs. Analysts suggest this disparity may be linked to the “endurance economy,” where younger citizens facing daily economic pressures may be more wary of policies that carry personal financial risks.
