Canalink launches submarine cable linking Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura

Canalink has begun deploying a new submarine optical fiber cable system that will connect the eastern Canary Islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The work is part of the Project RING, an €34 million initiative to create a resilient fiber‑optic ring, with €23 million funded by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Digital). The installation will lay 553 km of cable on the seabed and link three landing points on each island via two independent routes, providing redundancy and higher capacity for operators, businesses and public administrations.

Canalink CEO Rubén Molowny said the Gran Canaria landing represents a major step toward robust digital infrastructure for the islands, stressing that connectivity is essential for economic competitiveness, territorial cohesion, innovation and future digital services. The project follows strict environmental safeguards and complies with regional, national and EU regulations.
